Clayton Type 1 no. D8568 was remarkably the only survivor of the class '17s' in spite of a total of 117 of these bo-bo diesel electric locomotives being built between 1962 and 1965. Unfortunately they weren't a successful design with some of the locos only having a work life of 5 years. All of the class had been withdrawn by 1971. The unique bodyshape with the cab in the middle of the locomotive was to maximise visability for the driver in both directions of travel. D8568 is owned by the Diesel Traction Group (who also own D1015, D821 and D7029) and is based at the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway.
