Todays Featured Photograph: On the 16th November 2012, the South Yorkshire RHTT opted to spray the Brigg line as far as Northorpe instead of visiting Grimsby as usual on a Friday. DRS old liveried 20303 leads 20301 on the 3S13 Wrenthorpe to Wrawby junction via Northorpe, heading south at Scawby which is just south of Brigg. The RHTT train containing sandite, would reverse at Northorpe before returning to Wrawby junction. (See latest news for more photos and details).

HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: Colas Rail 56094 was trialled for the first time on the Teigngrace Timber on the 19th September 2012 instead of the usual booked Colas class 66/8. After 56094 required some attention, the train departed nearly two hours late and the 6Z52 Gloucester to Teigngrace empty timber carriers is captured passing Standish junction.

HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: Colas Rail 56094 worked its first train in South Wales since its mainline comeback with Colas Rail on the 18th September 2012. The Grid which yesterday had worked light engine to Canton from Eastleigh, worked light engine from Canton to Gloucester the morning as 0Z30 and then hauled 8 empty timber wagons as the 6Z30 Gloucester to Barry. The train running over 80minutes late speeds through Magor on the main with Grid 94 at the helm.

HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: Sporting the latest Harry Needle Orange livery, 20314 leads 20311 at Streetly near Sutton Coldfield whilst hauling the 5Z20 Kilmarnock to Laira, Plymouth as far as Washwood Heath on the 22nd August 2012. The consist was barrier vehicles 6348 and 6330 with newly refurbished and converted from a buffet car 42513. The Choppers would be replaced by 31601 and 31602 at Washwood Heath and would work the train forward to South Devon.

HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: The National Railway Museum's Royal train liveried 47798 'Prince William' on hire to West Coast Railways hauls the 1Z83 Carlisle to Crewe 'The Mersey Moorlander' having taken over from 45305 at Carnforth down loop. The train was over 40minutes late at this point and had started from Carlisle already 15minutes down. Br Blue 47580 was on the rear, as 47798 is captured at Hest Bank on the 6th August 2012.

HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: The Deltic's Preservation Society's D9009 Alycidon made a welcome return to the mainline on the 25th July 2012 working the Elizabethan charter from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh. Steam 60163 'Tornado' would work the return to London whilst D9009 would run light engine to Warrington Arpley yard. Running slightly behind schedule, the Br Two Tone Green Deltic speeds through Marston, Frinkley Lane between Newark and Grantham.
HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: DCR hired in Br Two Tone Green 47812 (D1916) leads the 6Z31 Cardiff Canton to Chaddesden sidings consisting of newly refurbished wagons for use on scrap services. The train rounds the curve at Thornwell near Chepstow on the 24th July 2012 running about 75minutes late.
HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: On the 21st July 2012, GBRf operated a private charter for their staff from Cardiff Central to Paignton and return. GBRf also operated a railtour from Paignton to Plymouth and return which was open to the public. The two locomotives involved were the Fifty Fund's Br Blue 50044 'Exeter' and GBRf's unique rainbow liveried 66720. The '50' performed flawlessly until the return working where unfortunately the loco suffered from overheating which resulted in leaking oil. This meant that the train was diverted via Bristol Parkway to allow 66720 to haul the train to Cardiff as it was better to prevent the '50' from overheating. On the return, D444 looking resplendent hauls the 1Z53 18:15 Paignton to Cardiff Central over Cockwood Harbour near Starcross. For more photographs of D444 in the South West, please click here
HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: With the majority of the serviceable class '60' fleet now in DB Schenker house colours, the traditional EW&S livery is now beginning to become a rarity. On the 20th July, DB Schenker's EW&S liveried 60049 worked the 6M76 Margam to Dee Marsh loaded covered steel and return empties as 6V75. The train which originally left 62minutes early would eventually be cancelled at Llanwern. 60049 rounds the curve with the 6V75 09:30 Dee Marsh to Margam empty covered steel at Ponthir near Caerleon. 60049 from Llanwern would pilot 66155 on the 6B04 empty steel to Margam. Remarkably, 60049 is the fourth class '60' in Wales alongside 60054 (at margam), 60063 (working 6M86 to Dee Marsh) and 60040 (working 6B13 Robeston to Westerleigh and 6B47 return).

HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: On the 16th July 2012, in dismal photographic weather, DB Schenker 59201 creeps through Severn Tunnel junction powering the 7C83 Machen to Whatley loaded stone in box wagons. The Machen which now runs roughly 2-3 times a week is often consisted of hanson stone hoppers and usually goes to West Drayton.
HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: After resting on the Ebbw Vale line, the Royal train arrived East Usk Yard, Newport on the morning of the 11th July 2012 in the hands of Royal train liveried 67006 and Silver liveried 'Diamond Jubilee' 67026. Princess Elizabeth 46201 hauled the Royal train as the 08:00 East Usk Yard to Worcester via the marches. 67006 ran north light engine to Hereford where it would pilot the steam locomotive to Worcester. 46201 leading the Royal train with Prince Charles onboard and 67026 on the rear is illustrated at Howton Court Crossing following a lengthy water stop at Pontrilas.
HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: DCR 56312 now without its Railfest Advertising branding leads the 5Z56 10:00 Carlisle Wapping Sidings to Laira T&RSMD consisting of Virgin barrier MK2 vehicles 3344 and 5952 and newly refurbished and converted from buffet cars, 42503 and 42502 sandwiched between, at Charfield on the 10th July 2012. The train had originated from Kilmarnock Barclay the evening before where the buffet cars have been transformed into passenger coaches.
HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: DRS 66425 running slightly behind schedule hauls the returning 4M36 Cardiff Wentloog to Daventry LESS CO2 Tesco Express at Chepstow on the 1st July 2012. The DRS operated train returns via Lydney and Gloucester on Sundays as opposed to the train usually returning via the marches every weekday.
HOME PAGE PHOTOGRAPH: DB Schenker's Silver 67026 'Diamond Jubilee' rounds the curve at Tamworth powering the 1Z20 Glasgow Central to Southampton Western Docks on the 30th June 2012. The skip having recently spent a brief period in Scotland later returned to Didcot the following day in an 0A16 convoy from Eastleigh and is set to move to Toton.

TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: DRS 37612 leads Virgin barrier coaches MK2s 3344 and 5952 and recently refurbished FGW MK3s coaches 42385 and 42501 (converted from previously FGW MK3 Buffet cars) sandwiched inbetween the barriers, powering south at Ashchurch on the 26th June 2012. The consist had originated from Kilmarnock at 08:20 as 5Z56 with DCR loco 56312 in charge (56312 now without the Railfest branding). However, unfortunately the Grid failed whilst working the train and was dumped in Eden Valley Goods Loop before being rescued by DRS 37612. The Grid was inevitably dropped off at Washwood Heath and the Growler continued with 5Z56 to Laira about 3 hours behind schedule.

TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: Tom Clift's fully restored Br Blue 26038 made its preservation debut on the 6th May 2012, remarkably hauling a train for the first time in 20 years following its withdrawal in 1992. The snow-plough fitted scottish loco hauls the first service of the day on the Barry Tourist Railway as it approaches Barry Island with three Gatwick Express coaches with Eurostar liveried and Eurostar dellner coupling fitted 73118 at the rear. The '26' is due to appear at the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in a few weeks time, in a diesel gala which also includes 31466 from Lydney. Undoubtedly both locomotives will star at the event. The '26' and '73' will also be working on the 7th May 20
TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: In connection with the Llandudno Festival, Nenta tours operated a 1Z35 Norwich to Holyhead railtour on the 5th May 2012 with Large Logo Blue liveried 47580 'County of Essex' a favourite with rail enthusiasts at the helm and WCRC 47851 on the rear. The tour hurries through Penmaenmawr on the North Wales coast.

Colas Rail 66847 went light engine as the 0Z47 Washwood Heath to Crewe DMD to pick up DB stored locomotives - 56051, 56065, 56078 and 56049 which all still carry faded Fertis livery. The colourful combination is illustrated here at Dunston south of Stafford with 66847 leading Four Grids as the 0Z56 09:33 Crewe to Kingsbury. 56065 and 56051 would then be taken forward by 66847 to Burton Nemesis Rail as the 0Z57 whilst 56078 and 56049 would be dumped at Kingsbury. TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: On the 5th April 2012, DRS 37608 leads 37069 top-and-tailed on the 5Z26 Crewe CS to Exeter St Davids ECS at Newport in platform 4. The train went into Newport station to reverse the stock, therefore the MK2 TSO was now at the rear of the train facing Cardiff. The Growlers had missed out their scheduled stop in Hereford to allow enough time for the turnabout to be completed without running late. The ECS was for Pathfinder's Scottish Excursion from Exeter St Davids to Dumbarton, Stranraer and Oban over the Easter Weekend.

6V67 Redcar to Margam loaded Coke due to the failure of 66086 which had failed near Broadholme, Derby whilst working the train. 60063 was sent to rescue the train and led the shed dead in train and the consist all the way to South Wales. The eye-catching consist is photographed at Duffryn near Newport. 60079 rescued 60007 on the 6B13 Robeston to Westerleigh loaded murco bogie tanks which had failed due to a loss of power. TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: Due to the closure of the Lydney line, the Tesco Express was diverted via the Severn Tunnel to Wentloog and diverted via the marches on return, although the train runs via the marches mondays-fridays anyways, the earlier sunday timings presented a golden opportunity to photograph the train on the marches route in daylight. On the 1st April 2012, DRS' ex-fastline 66304 speeds through Ponthir powering the 4M36 Wentloog to Daventry Tesco Express.

TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: 57316 was the last class '57' locomotive to work the 1W91 Cardiff Central to Holyhead on the 23rd March 2012 and the 1V31 Holyhead to Cardiff Central on the 26th March 2012. The 'WAG' Express diagram has now swapped traction from Class '57s' to Class '67s' and DB Schenker's Arriva Blue liveried 67002 became the first skip to work the 1W91 on the 26th March 2012 and the first '67' to work the 1V31 on the 27th March 2012. TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: After working the overnight 6M94 Margam to Corby steel coils, DB Schenker's Cancer Trust liveried 60074 'Teenage Spirit' returned on the 19th March 2012 powering the 6V92 Corby to Margam empty steel coils. Running about 10minutes early, the Sky blue tug rounds the curve at Thornwell.

TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: The Virgin Class '57s' are set to be replaced on the WAG express by DB Schenker Class '67s' at the end of the month. Arriva Trains Wales plain blue liveried 57316 heads north with the late afternoon 1W91 16:15 Cardiff Central to Holyhead WAG express at Llanellen near Abergavenny on the 14th March 2012.
TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: Quickly into the action, DB Schenker's newly reinstated and repainted Class 60, 60063 was sent to South Wales as a straight replacement for 60045 on Friday 9th March working the 6V19 Immingham to Margam steel. The tug was immediately sent into action on Saturday 10th March 2012, working the delayed 6H25 Margam to Llanwern loaded steel and return 6H26 empty steel to Margam. The loco in ex-works condition, trundles pass 66100 in Newpor A.D.j on the down relief working the slightly late 6H26 13:30 Llanwern to Margam empty steel. 60074 would be D.I.T behind 66188 on the 6H29 Margam to Llanwern.

TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: Ex-Fastline liveried 56302 on hire from Ed Stevenson to DCR (although all of the paperwork is believed to have been carried out through Nemesis Rail) hauls a rake of eighteen empty box scrap wagons at Bishton level crossing whilst working the 6Z56 Wembley to Cardiff Canton sidings. It is believed that the wagons maybe going for maintenance at Canton depot, pending a trial run to Shipley which should be operated by a DCR Class '56'. It is the first time a Class '56' locomotive has visited South Wales this year.
TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: Ex-Wrexham and Shropshire liveried 67013 leads AL01 with DVT 82301 on the rear, powering the 1I28 10:03 Birmingham Moor Street to Wembley football special via the WCML at Chelmscote on the 26th February 2012. The train was diverted due to the Chiltern line being closed between Banbury and Bicester. The football specials were for supporters travelling to the Carling Cup final at Wembley between Cardiff City and Liverpool FC.

TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: On the 18th February 2012, LMS Class 5MT 4-6-0 nos 45305 leads 44932 powering the 1Z86 London Euston to Carlisle (from Carnforth) at Docker. 86259 would work the train from London Euston to Carnforth and return from Preston, whilst the steam locomotives would work between Carnforth and Preston via the WCML, Carlisle and the S&C.
TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: On the 17th February 2012, two DRS '20s' made a rare appearance for the class in South Wales when 20309 and 20308 worked a route learner as 0Z30 Crewe Gresty Bridge to Cardiff Central (only as far as Wentloog) and 0Z31 return to Crewe. The two choppers round the curve at Maindee west junction, Newport.

TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: On the 11th February 2012, Freightliner's 90046 is photographed on an Allelys low loader at Allelys, Studley yard. The Freightliner Skoda derailed at Bletchley south junction, Milton Keynes on the 3rd February whilst running light engine to Wembley on hire to Virgin Trains. The loco was subsequently moved to Wembley and finally left on the evening on the 10th February. The lorry stabled at Studley yard over the weekend, before departing for Crewe Basford Hall in the late hours on the 12th February.
TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: On the 11th February 2012, DRS 37510 leads a snow train consisting of 99709594014-1 and ADB977869 with old DRS liveried 37087 on the rear at Stenson junction powering the 6Z30 Derby RTC to Carlisle Kingmoor. The Growlers and the snow train would later move forward to Dundee as the 6Z31.
TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: On the 9th February 2012, DB Schenker's EWS liveried 67025 worked a private charter from Kensington to Newport. The 'skip' then hauled the 5Z29 11:10 Newport to Bristol Barton Hill ECS move consisting of Anglia liveried MK2s. The 5Z29 consist hurries through Llandevenny, Bishton. The '67' will work the 5Z30 09:36 Bristol Temple Meads to Newport and then 1Z30 11:10 return to Kensington tomorrow.
February 4th 2012 - TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: On the 4th February 2012, Freightliner's unique advertising 'Shanks' liveried 66522 worked the 6M11 Killoch to Fiddlers Ferry loaded freightliner heavy haul coal and is illustrated here in wintry conditions on the approach to Ribblehead station on the Settle & Carlisle line.
February 1st 2012 - TODAYS FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: Network Rail's 31285 leads the Network Rail Structure gauging train consisting of 99666, 975280, 975081, 460000 and DBSO 9708 on the approach to Newport A.D.j in the evening sunshine. The train was running as the 1Q06 14:58 Landore TMD to Landore TMD via Newport A.D.j, Swansea, Coryton, Penarth and Cardiff Bay. The early running of the train made an afternoon shot possible.
January 2012 - FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH: 55022 was very much the 'heritage loco' throughout most of 2011 and was a regular on railtour duties. In June 2011, 55022 made a visit to Wick and Thurso on an SRPS charter. The Deltic roars back through Clynemilton East near Brora after visitng Wick and Thurso heading back to Edinburgh.
